30 or 45 minutes is a lot easier of a time investment to make than a feature film, and longer-running continuity can more fun, too -- even if it is almost inevitably something of a disappointment.
One of the shows we have enjoyed fairly well is Sci-Fi channel's Eureka. We watched the first two seasons on iTunes (though they mysteriously were dropped from there a month or two ago).
It's a dorky-fun action-comedy, the high point of which is its thoroughly charming characters. And about three of the episodes were REALLY, REALLY good stories on top of that.
Their third season just started, and while it isn't available on iTunes anymore, we can watch the episodes as they come out on the sci-fi channel's web site.
The first few episodes this season were OK, about what I expected. But the fourth one ("I Do Over") was way above average. My jaw dropped at the end!
Of course, A LOT of the pleasure came from being very familiar with all of the continuity, knowing all of the characters, etc., so I wouldn't call this a recommendation, exactly. But if you're familiar with the show, the latest episode was one of the best, in my opinion...
